From http://www.moc.org/exfaq.htm
"Did any foreign countries recognize the Confederacy?
No. Although the Confederacy found sympathy in several foreign nations, namely Great Britain, international recognition was never attained."

The south had no official alliances with any foreign countries in the Civil War. There were attempts to establish ties with both Great Britain and France, both of which were somewhat sympathetic with the south's cause, and had they been successful in attaining either country's supplies of arms and naval powers, the results of the war would have been significantly different. As it was, the Union was the beneficiary of an alliance with those two by war's end.
