How many golf balls are sitting on the moon?

    Question #59838. Asked by Priscilla9.

If I understand the following website correctly, Alan Shepard brought three balls, the first of which got buried in his first attempt to swing the golf club on the moon... the second went only a little ways... and the third ball soared off into the wild blue (or is it black on the moon?) yonder... Shepard left one of the balls on the moon.

Shepard reported that the third ball went out for "miles and miles and miles."

There are TWO, not three, as several sources incorrectly claim. Shepard swung four times. Alan Shepard's first swing moved the ball less than a meter; his second swing missed, and kicked up some dust, the third swing hit that same first ball a couple hundred meters. Then he dropped a second ball, and his fourth swing hit that second ball a couple hundred meters.

For more discussion, and a transcript, including a 1991 interview in which Shepard himself says "two golf balls," see http://www.matthewweathers.com/year2007/golf_balls_moon.html
