Was paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould any relation to "robber baron" Jay Gould?

    Question #59859. Asked by griffinj.

    lanfranco

I don't think so. Jay Gould was born in New York in 1836. Stephen Jay Gould's crossing ancestor appears to have arrived in the US in 1901, according to Gould's book of essays, "I Have Landed":

I admit that this seems to have been a maternal grandfather, but my guess is that the original paternal family name was not "Gould":

Many thanks, Lanfranco. I had suspected not, but I'd never read the book you mention.
