4, 8, 15, 16, 23, and 42
These numbers were being transmitted repeatedly, causing Rousseau's science team to come investigate. They scuttled their vessel on some rocks, leaving them stranded on the island.
Crazy Leonard and his partner Sam Toomey heard the numbers from their naval listening post in the south Pacific. Toomey won a contest using the numbers and believed they had cursed him, to the point where he committed suicide.
Hurley got the numbers while institutionalized with Leonard and won the lottery with them. He begins to believe he is cursed.
The numbers are stamped on the outside of the hatch.
The same numbers are the code Desmond inputs into the computer every 108 minutes (the sum of the numbers) to prevent what he believes might be the end of the world.
Everyone seems to be connected to the numbers, such as the flight being 815, Jack's seat was #23B, Ana Lucia's was #42F, Locke was paralyzed 4 years ago, Rousseau has been on the island 16 years, Kate and Tom buried the time capsule on August 15th, etc.
