During the 18th century, a lawyer invented something which never really marketed but is known as the ancestor of our modern day item. Having two differing attachments for certain people of religious backrounds, it proved not much of a success at all. What is it, who invented it, and what is interesting about his patent for this product?

This will be lawyer James Puckle's 1718 machine gun, which shot round round bullets at Christians and square ones at Turks. The patent was apparently one of the first to provide a clear description of what the invention did.

Nice One Frankie. And by researching this I even found out that there is a patron saint of arms dealers. Fancy that. ;)

Well, I was thinking that might be St. Sebastian or even St. Barbara, but no, it's Adrian of Nicomedia.

Just when I think I can't possibly encounter another saint ...

A word that we now use in a negative and perhaps dismissively "categorizing" sense was invented by an 18th-century-born man to refer to something involved with a revolutionary technology devised in the West along about the mid-15th century. The modern understanding is associated with a famous U.S. political journalist. What is the word, who was the journalist, and what other, somewhat negative word also started out as a technical term in the field in question?
