Which element comes next in this sequence: oxygen, nitrogen, chlorine, manganese, molybdenum, tellurium, tungsten...?

Question #59998. Asked by gmackematix. (Oct 16 05 4:28 AM)

This is driving me crazy! Could you answer two yes or no questions (this one and the one after this)?

Does it have anything to do with their atomic numbers?

Yes, I can answer your question.
No, it is nothing to so with atomic numbers.

Applaud anger is my clue to the next one.

If oxygen and nitrogen were the other way round I would say it was the order in which they were discovered, in which case the next would be Uranium.

    Yay Robboy, for uranium!
    Oxygen 1771, Nitrogen 1772,...,Uranium 1779

The clue, "Applaud anger" was "clap wrath", a hint at Klaproth, the discoverer of uranium.
Apparently, the first element to be isolated since antiquity was arsenic.

I'm sure robboy would just love a Golden Banana from you, gmack, dear, but poor old romeo might get a little miffed...

I recently bought one of those many "energy" bars out there and looking at the nutrition label, I see all these elements like Selenium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Manganese, Molybdenum, Zine, Copper, Chromium, and others. Does our body really need all of this stuff?

I have a container which originally held 500 grams of what the label claims to be "finest table salt" - pretty much pure sodium chloride. Yet, out of every 100 grams in the container, only 39 grams are sodium. Since a molecule of table salt is made up of an equal number of sodium and chlorine atoms, this leads me to believe that chlorine is a much heavier element than sodium. Is that really true?

Why is there 78% nitrogen in the air, or where does this vast proporton of nitrogen come from?
