He once was arrested and tortured under command of his father for religious reasons. Sorcery and magic were attributed for his 'cures' and he was sentenced to death. The first method was not successful, although a 'hot' alternative seemed to do the trick. Later, in the 1500's, certain European countrymen performed a ritual beside a statue of his honour. Who was this person, how did he die, what is the signifigance of this ritual, and what might an alarm clock have to do with all this?

This is St. Vitus, before whose statue 16th-century Germans danced in the hope of achieving a year of good health. A rooster, thrown into the boiling oil in which Vitus died, is associated with him, so he is the patron saint of people who have trouble getting up in the morning:
