Modern criminal charges by a valid court? My guess would be the sheikh Ahmad Yassin, founder of the Hamass organization, who was tried and convicted of murder and planning terrorist acts in Israel in the 1980s. In the next decade, he was released as part of some deal or other, and last year the Israelis made two attempts to take his life, the second of which succeeded.

Your article is mistaken. Saddam is definately not the first. He may be the first brought to an Arab court though.

The article might have also been unclear in its wording, Saddam is the first leader of an internationally recognized Arab nation to face criminal charges.
Hamass is a terrorist organization.

Hamas (no extra "S") is a terrorist organisation? What, like the French Resistance was a terrorist organisation? Like the The American War of Independence was carried out by "terrorists"? When you take over a country ,subjugate its people and treat them like dirt they fight back. Geddit.

You make an interesting point LRon.
What is the difference between terrorism and legitimate self defense?
A topic that belongs in the chats or the forums.
However, Al Qaida claims that their suicide destruction of the Twin Towers was an act of self defense against a Godless society threatening theirs.
Please send me a personal message to discuss this further.

Hamas is a terrorist organization, and it's even on the UN terrorist watch list. Technically, the French Resistence was also a terrorist organiztion, as were the various factions in Israel (the Stern Gang, the Irgun, the Hagannah etc.). The people fighting for US independence were more an illegal militia than a terrorist organization. All of these groups mentioned above were fighting for nationalist causes and for good reasons.
