Byzantine.
The word is derived from Byzantium (later known as Constantinople and Istanbul), the seat of the eastern Roman empire.
It probably gets is meaning from the complex structure of the imperial administration or the tortuosity of its politics.

Franco, you yourself just used a toponym... "labyrinthine" which is derived from the Labyrinth of the Minotaur myths.

Strictly speaking, Josh, a labyrinth, even the famed mythological example on Crete, is a thing, not a place. But I will admit that it is included on this list:
