If world population increases at the current rate, but food production techniques remain the same, then in what year will there be insufficient farmland to sustain the populace? What new farm techniques have been proposed to counter this?

Look to China, no new farm techniques needed.

What inspired me to ask this was an article on vertical farming.
http://www.verticalfarm.com/
I was hoping vertical farming would involve fields stacked vertically on end with big heating and lighting elements between them to grow the crops like some kind of giant agricultural toaster.
Sadly, it's nothing as fun as that.

Oh, I don't know, gmack. The concept of "farming skyscrapers" in urban centers sounds like fun to this city dweller.
