This was temporarily halted by nature in 1848 and was partially halted by man, also temporarily, in 1969. What is it, why did the stoppages occur?

Question #60159. Asked by gmackematix. (Oct 24 05 8:03 PM)

    Niagara Falls stopped flowing...

The natural occurance is because ice dams built up in the winter...

The man-made occurance is because the Army Corps of Engineers diverted the flow in order to prevent ice dams from forming ever again...

Yay, Josh! And despite my not mentionng flowing in the question.

For some reason, those Internet trivia lists for the gullible claim that the falls froze in 1932.
Even in 1848, they may have been blocked but the Niagara Falls never completely froze, and in 1932, they haven't even managed to pick one of the six years that the American Falls were blocked.
