Microchips are made on thin disks of silicon, called wafers. The circuits are actually built by layering insulators and conductors into a sandwich. The insulator used in microchips is silicon dioxide. The conductor used in microchips is polysilicon. Then photolithography is used for printing circuits on microchips.
Then microchip is glued to ceramic or plastic substrate. The microchip has to communicate with the outside world, it needs electrical connections. To create this connections, complex wiring machines attach wires to the microchip.

We are talking about microchip's technology
in general.
A microchip is, properly, an integrated circuit.
