    What gases are produced when acids react with a carbonate compound, and what gases are produced when acids react with a hydrogen carbonate compound?

    Question #60269. Asked by Priscilla9. (Oct 30 05 10:52 AM)

    NatalieW

    A compound such as calcium carbonate will react with an acid to give carbon dioxide gas and liquid water:
    2HCl + CaCO3 -> CaCl2 + H2O + CO2

    Sodium hydrogen carbonate (aka sodium bicarbonate) will react with an acid in just the same way as a carbonate does:
    HCl + NaHCO3 -> NaCl + H2O + CO2

    Changing the acid (eg, to sulphuric acid) only changes the counterion of the metal salt; water and carbon dioxide are produced regardless.
