    Did the Kurds even have an independent Kurdish republic?

    		Not according to the history section of:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurdistan

    According to the linked article on Kurds, they are the largest ethnic group without their own state. That article also lists how many Kurds are estimated to be in each country at present.

    		The Kurds were one of many ethnic groups which lived under the Ottoman rule. Before the Ottomans, they were nomadic.

    		I was thinking about the Iran Kurd Mahabad republic (1945-46) supported by the Soviet Union.
