Spiritualism -- the belief that spirits can communicate with the living, usually with the help of certain sensitive individuals called mediums.
The Fox Sisters tied strings to apples and raised them to drop on the stairs to suggest ghostly footsteps... and also created other sounds by cracking the knuckles of their toes...

Yay again Josh! I haven't had time to read to page 4 of your site but it was Houdini, who did much to reduce the popularity of spiritualism by recreating the tricks used by mediums.
