An important altarpiece in an American museum is filled with disguised symbolism -- a woman sitting on the ground, a pot of lilies, a candle that has just gone out, lions on the armrests of a bench, and a little item intended to rid one's home of vermin. What is this work of art, and what does that pest-control device mean?

Would this be the Merode Altarpiece? As for the mousetrap---"The human flesh of Christ is a bait for the devil who, in seizing it, brings about his own ruin."

Spectacular, peasy! A major yay! And you found the right site, too.

Meyer Schapiro was one of our greats, and his work on the symbolism of the Merode Altarpiece was groundbreaking.

Several people who were feeling no pain reeled into an important European museum quite recently and left behind a damaged work of art when security alarms caused them to flee. What is the museum, what is the work of art, and can you find me a picture of it -- damage included?

An important, if somewhat disturbing, work of American art that was the subject of one of my previous questions is suddenly in danger of being sold away from the city that was its creator's home and that has been its location for over a century. City residents and officials are taking steps to prevent the sale. What is this work, where is it, and who is trying to buy it?

It is the sole work of art in its quite remote location, although a museum elsewhere does have a replica on display. Created at the behest of someone who was planning a trip to the site, the work was intended to honor certain of his colleagues. Additional replicas were subsequently sold for several hundred dollars. What is it, where is it, and whose idea was it?
