Who tempted Eve in Genesis, and where were they when this happened?

    Question #60358. Asked by JoshCaleb12. (Nov 04 05 12:30 AM)

I'm not sure if "tempted" is the right word, as the text itself never uses it. It was more of a conversation between Eve and the snake, somewhere within sight of the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden.

You caught one of my little tricks here... it was a snake (in many versions, "serpent"), while most people think it was the devil or Satan...

Based on the way I asked the question, I'll grant the point about "tempted" not actually a word used in the passage, but it was still a temptation in effect...

There is one other "trick" to my question... Can anyone find it?

Not sure if this is your 'trick', but could you mean that 'HE' tempted Eve? (and to be pedantic, she wasn't called Eve until afterwards..)

    I found this:

In the story in Genesis 3:1-5, Eve is tempted by a creature referred to as "He" and described simply as a serpent.

Okay... I'll give you that one about her being named AFTERwards, peasy... though I have to confess that wasn't my original trick...

When I did a search in my online Bible this morning, I couldn't find any references to "Eden"... so I thought that "garden of Eden" must have been a misnomer as far as the Bible was concerned... but, I did the search again this evening, and lo, and behold... there's a whole list of "Edens"... Either I misspelled the word this morning, or the engine wasn't working right when I tried it... *sigh*

Is this a game of 'pick a trick, any trick...'? ;)

Well, it is also true that she wasn't known as Eve until after having eaten the fruit. In the passage in question she was referred to as "the woman".
