Yay Centy.
I had thought it was a 1950s film, then I made the mistake of checking in Wiki just before asking the question.
The Wiki artcle does have a link to William Castle and lists some of the other cinematic gimmicks he used such as inflatable skeletons flying over the audience or ghosts on screen that can only be seen with special glasses.
