Have any names of female gladiators come down to us from the times of the Roman Empire?

    Question #60554. Asked by Flem-ish.

Although this article is dated 2003, I have as recently as a few months ago read about the discovery of a woman gladiator's grave in Great Britain, dated to the 1st century, CE. I could have been watching a repeat on TV, but it was interesting in its rarity.

    Amazonia and Achillea.

    This from my above citation:

"The women are facing each other with their names inscribed in Greek beneath them, indicating "incontrovertibly that these are both women because they are named ‘Amazon’ and ‘Achillia’" (Zoll, 2002, p. 36). Presumably, these are not their real names, but "singularly appropriate" noms de guerre for female combatants (Coleman, 2000, p. 487)."

However, I'm still searching for what I believe is a more recent discovery, in England, of a female whose real name was included in her grave.

Me too I had found "Amazonia and Achillea" but when studying the photo of the marble relief at Halicarnassus in the article mentioned by robboy the first name definitely seems to be Amazon. As to the second name, it is less legible to me, but the last syllable has an I rather than an E. Though robboy omits to explicitly point out what the names are, I don't think King Salomon would disagree, if I suggested a shared YAY.

Sorry, robboy. Had not noticed your second reply yet.Would be interesting if that other name could be found.

Also, there is no recorded history of any two female gladiators named Amazonia and Achillea, there names just appear on this ancient stone carving and the named figures could be merely be representive of much larger groups.
