Which four presidents of the United States were assassinated?

    Question #606. Asked by Dan.

    Gunslinger

Presidents Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley and Kennedy were murdered while in office. There were other attempts, the latest being attempts on the lives of Presidents Truman, Ford and Reagan. I've always thought the term 'assassinated' lends a sort of weird, psychological dignity to what is nothing more than a base, obscene criminal act - murder.

There have been eighteen attempts to kill sitting and former United States Presidents and Presidents-Elect. Four attempts on sitting Presidents have succeeded; the 16th, 20th, 25th and 35th US Presidents were all assassinated in office, and two others were injured.

    Successful assassinations:

    1 -- Abraham Lincoln
    2 -- James A. Garfield
    3 -- William McKinley
    4 -- John F. Kennedy
