Male American Pilgrims are often pictured wearing large hats with buckles on them. Did they really wear such hats and what purpose did the buckles serve?

    Question #60630. Asked by my_baby_love.

There seems to be some dispute on this issue.

    http://www.theweebsite.com/sewing/hats/
states that the hats were first worn by the Puritans, and later came to be called "Pilgrim's hats." The buckles were for decoration.

    http://www.sail1620.org/discover_feature_pilgrim_clothing.shtml
states that Pilgrims did not wear such hats, although European Puritans did. "Pilgrim men did not wear black breeches, square white collar and cuffs, wide buckled belts, black steeple hats with a buckle, nor did Pilgrim women wear full black skirts, white aprons and dark capes. Puritan adults in Boston may have worn these clothes on formal occasions after 1632, but in 1621 the Pilgrims wore entirely different clothing."

So we seem to have agreement that the hats were worn in Europe by the Puritans.

I was under the impression though that Puritans did not approve of unnecessary personal decorations like make up, jewelry, and buckles on hats.

The first source I mentioned stated that the buckles were the only allowed form of decoration; they could have nothing fancier.
