In all fairness, what Einstein turned down was not really so much a leading role in politics. The president of Israel is really more of a figurehead, like the monarch in England. The real leadership is in the hands of the prime minister.
If you've played my quiz on politician's earlier jobs, you'll note the story of Captain Logo, who was the crown prince of American Samoa, when he chose instead to play football. His uncle was made paramount chief.

C. B. Fry, the English sportsman, was offered the throne of Albania while he was serving with the British delegation to the League of Nations. Negotiations are said to have broken down because he asked for too much money. The full circumstances are shrouded in mystery: some people think it was an elaborate practical joke.
