What is used in the preperation of an antibiotic, is also a common paint solvent, may be pertained as a smug sense of flattery, yet has nothing to do with the fruit it's named after, apart from the smell?

    Question #60745. Asked by peasypod.

    crisw

    Banana oil.

    From Wikipedia-
"Banana oil is an ester CH3COOC5H11 and a isomeric mixture produced by liquid mixture of amyl acetate and usually nitrocellulose, having a bananalike odor. Is used as a flavoring agent, as a paint and lacquer solvent, and in the preparation of penicillin."

banana oil is also boiled to produce banana gas which is used to test the seal on self-contained breathing apparatus machines, and if you get a whiff of it you will make sure your mask is sealed properly next time, because it sure isnt fun cleaning puke out of a two stage regulator and SCBA mask!
