Dr. Seuss
When he was born they named him Theodor Seuss Geisel
This was in 1904
Even in childhood, Ted showed his love for words by his writing. In high school, he was the editor of the school paper. He often called himself by the pseudonym Dr. Seuss. Sometimes he used T.S. LeSieg [his last name spelt backward].

In fact, he used the LeSieg pseudonym on a number of published books as well, that he wrote but didn't illustrate. But, I think he used "Theo LeSieg" instead of "T.S."

Here is a wikipedia article about Dr. Seuss who wrote under the name "Theo LeSieg"... it doesn't say anything about school cartoons, though.

Incidently, the article says he also wrote under the name "Rosetta Stone"...
