asks:
As depicted in the film, which infantry division of the US Army did Forrest Gump serve in in Vietnam? Hint, but not an obvious one: its insignia is called an "octofoil."

dejavu is right. It's the last outfit I served in (in the 80's, not long before it was deactivated). I was proud to wear the octofoil, as my father did as a grunt in WWII, from N. Africa, through Sicily, our pal France, and into and out of the Hurtgen Forest. The "Old Reliables" suffered the second highest casualty rate of any infantry unit in the ETO. Dad came through unscathed, amazingly. Interestingly, the first enemy combatants the 9th saw in WWII were the Vichy French in North Africa, before they suddenly remembered who their friends were. In Viet Nam, the 9th handled "riverine" duty, light boats in the rivers and coastal waterways. Forrest didn't do that, apparently.
