In British schools many are designated JMI which means Junior Mixed and Infants. Grammatically this should be Mixed Junior and Infants, as the other doesn't make sense as it implies the infants school isn't mixed. Why then is it the one still used?

The reasons, as so often in Britain, are historical. In Victorian and Edwardian times, kids in the junior school age-range were often separated, with different entrances and in some cases even with separate sites. Dividing Infants for (that is, up to age 7 or so) for gender was extremely rare.
