When a territory attains statehood in the US, can anyone born in that territory even before it became a state become president? (Could a person from Alaska or Hawaii over 55 years old run for president?)

    Question #61072. Asked by Arpeggionist.

I suspect the answer is yes, because, arguably, the example of George Washington and some of the early presidents, who were all born prior to the creation of the United States, goes as precedent.

This is a question of whether or not a resident of the territory, prior to statehood, was a US citizen. If they were born after the US attained sovereignty over Hawaii, they were born a US citizen and thus eligible.
