Is there any difference between what the Germans call "ein Tauchboot" and their famous "Unterseeboote"?

My Duden Deutsches Universal-Wörterbuch defines "Tauchboot" as "ein Unterseeboot, das nur für kurze Zeit getaucht bleiben kann," i.e. "a submarine which can only remain submerged for a short time." Dec 19 05, 8:49 AM

At http://www.deutsch4u.de/lexicon/unterseeboot I found another description of the difference. "Tauchboot" is described as a non-military submarine. I did not find any clear technical differences. As far as I have been able to check the first U-boote used a combination of elektro- and diesel-engines, were very slow, vulnerable and could make very short trips only. But nowhere did I find a definition of when the Tauchboote became Unterseeboote. Dec 19 05, 12:55 PM
