    Question #61182. gmackematix asks:

How many songs about Christmas have stopped at number 2 in the UK charts?

Everyhit.com says "Wham's "Last Christmas" was held off the top spot by Band Aid's huge sales in 1984. Almost any other week it would have easily topped the chart, selling half a million copies in that week alone. It went on to sell 1.42 million copies."

Fairytale of New York has been released on three occasions, the latest being this year with Katie Melua replacing Kirsty Maccoll (big mistake in my opinion) and the highest the song has reached was when it was released in 1987 i believe it was (i was still minus 2 years old back then so can not remember) and it got to number 2

As far as I can see, there wasn't much Christmassy stuff in the UK charts from its start in 1952 through to 1972.
There were two Christmassy no 1s with Belafonte's "Mary's Boy Child" and Dicky Valentine's awful "Christmas Alphabet", while Brenda Lee's classic "Rocking Around The Christmas Tree" only made #6.
The most Christmassy year of the 1960s was 1960 with Nina & Frederick's "Little Donkey" and Adam Faith's "Lonely Pup (in a Christmas Shop)" reaching #3 and #4 respectively.
I make it eight Christmas songs that have peaked at #2. They are:
Jan 1975 - "Wombling Merry Christmas" - The Wombles
Jan 1976 - "I Believe In Father Christmas" - Greg Lake
Jan 1981 - "Happy Xmas War is Over" - John Lennon (just ahead of Jona Lewie's "Stop the Cavalry")
Dec 1982 - "Blue Christmas" - Shakin' Stevens (on "The Shakin' Stevens EP" just ahead of "Peace on Earth - Little Drummer Boy" by Bing & Bowie)
    Jan 1983 - "Winter's Tale" - David Essex
Dec 1984 - "Last Christmas" - Wham! (bestselling song to peak at no 2 ever)
Dec 1987 - "Fairytale of New York" - The Pogues feat Kirsty MacColl
Dec 1994 - "All I Want For Christmas Is You" - Mariah Carey
Note that I haven't counted Abba's "I Have A Dream", The Housemartin's "Caravan of Love" or Jason Donovan's "When You Come Back To Me" (even if it does say "especially at this time of year" in the lyrics). My list of top 40s only goes up to 1994 so there may be more recent ones.
