What is the capital of the Northern Mariana Islands? Don't say Saipan, that's the name of an island and not of a town/city. It seems as the capital is divided into two or three: Capitol Hill, Susupe, maybe also Garapan. Who knows?

Question #61207. Asked by author. (Dec 24 05 12:05 PM)

From everything I've read, Saipan is BOTH the largest island AND capital of the Northern Mariana Islands. As an island group, it has an island as its' capital, not a specific city.

Well, Garapan (on Saipan Island) was the capital of the Northern Mariana Islands under Japanese mandate and also during the post war US mandate. Some sources say that Capitol Hill (sometimes spelled Capital Hill) now is the legislative capital while Susupe is the judicial capital. It is correct that (to make it simpler) Saipan is often referred to as the capital. But I don't think this is 100% correct.

What is correct to say is the capital of the Northern Mariana Islands: Saipan, which is the name of an island, not of a town, or one of these four actual towns on Saipan Island; Chalan Kanoa, Capitol Hill, Susupe, or Garapan, which are all referred to by different sources as the "capital" of the islands?
