Why do contractors place a tree on top of new homes they are building?

    Question #61318. Asked by alexaj.

    robboy

It's a European tradition in construction to place a small tree atop the building when the roof is completed. However, around the States, we see Christmas trees atop buildings, bridges and cranes during the season.
The tree atop a completed roof is an old custom, said Derek Chelchouski, construction supervisor for Drewlo Holdings, builders of the complex.

"I think it's an old European tradition," said Chelchouski. "My dad brought it over with him from Poland where you would put a tree on top of a house or barn to let neighbours know the roof was up."
