Why do contractors place a tree on top of new homes they are building?

It's a European tradition in construction to place a small tree atop the building when the roof is completed. However, around the States, we see Christmas trees atop buildings, bridges and cranes during the season. The tree atop a completed roof is an old custom, said Derek Chelchouski, construction supervisor for Drewlo Holdings, builders of the complex. "I think it's an old European tradition," said Chelchouski.
