Why do people become smaller as they get older?

Also, it probably has to do with the fact that the average hight of people has gone up in the last generation. My grandfather was 6'2" and considered to be of a towering hight, whereas today it is only little taller than most people (I'm 5'11"). So when you see a 6-foot man over 70 years of age, he was probably one of the tallest people he knew when he was younger.

Because the cartilidge in the knees, back, and various other parts of the body are worn away after years of walking upright and doing work.
