    Why do many smokers who quit cough more in the early stages than they did while smoking?

    		I have heard (from someone in the medical community, though not a doctor), that it is the body's way of ridding itself of the 'foreign matter'. This would not occur while a smoker is still smoking because the body has learned to 'live' with these chemicals. I though it sounded rational??

    		Yes, I suppose that without fresh layers of tar forming some of the old tar begins to come loose.
    Ugh! Probably better not to start smoking in the first place.
