According to the Macquarie Dictionary: "a method of dating archaeological material by comparison with ring patterns of timber." Comes from Greek dendros = tree; chronos = time.

Apparently, some archaeologists have trouble finding human partners, but have managed to gain some pleasure from dating trees instead.
It's a funny old world.

An irrelevant comment here that can be deleted by a kind editor before long - I actually met a girlfriend over a slice of tree! We had it on a Nature Trust stand and you had to guess (or very quickly count up) its age. I was trying to sell a guess to this girl and found myself looking into her eyes (and vice versa, of course) as hours went by. (Actually about five minutes - her 10 year old daughter would have made some fuss if it had been longer.) And we ended up going out. Isn't that romantic? There can't be many people who have found romance through dendrochronology. Pity it didn't last... I never found out how old the tree had been, by the way.
