When and why did advertising other products stop being popular in books? I have some from the 1940s full of them, and only seen a few since.

Perhaps the advertisers started to concentrate on the new medium of TV instead.
In looking about for this I found that there was a brief revival of ads in paperbacks in the US in the 1970s, but the response was overwhelmingly negative. Still, one pwrson said that when the advert was covered by a sticky label they made handy notes pages.
The idea of pages of adverts in schoolbooks is a bit disturbing. Still, it could be worse, we could have literary product placement in the stories themselves:
