According to http://www.westegg.com/inflation/infl.cgi
$500 in 1968 was worth $2766.49 in 2005 - so slightly more than that in 2006.
But something that cost $500 in 1968 is unlikely to have increased in price entirely in line with inflation. For instance, if a computer component cost $500 in 1968, an improved version could probably be found for $10 today. On the other hand, an apartment which cost $500 in 1968 would probably cost rather more than £3000 today.
