Keith Anderson wrote the song about himself and growing up as a big guy. He is a former body-builder who placed second in the Mr. Oklahoma Body Building competition in the early 1990's.
When he introduces the song in concert, he talks about how he was inspired to write it when he noticed that people's choices of heroes has changed since Sept 11 - he appreciates it when women prefer a big burley fireman type man over a wimpy Tom Cruise type guy. (His example, not mine.)
