We were told on the news hurricanes can only form with sea temperatures of I think around 90'F. If this is the case how did Britain get close to one in October 1987, in the middle of autumn. The sea temperature here would be unlikely to get above 50'F so where did it come from?

The Gulf Stream.

I doubt the gulf stream in October would get close to what it is in the Gulf of Mexico, by the time it reached the UK. I got the impression though sea temperature is the usual way, there must be others, however rare, as otherwise the wind would have to have formed way south and lasted for thousands of miles, when I seem to think it was a local storm.
