Actually, "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre", despite its sensationalist title, was as much a tense thriller as a splatter pic. There was another more boring tool film that we needed like a hole in the head. "Driller Killer", which also came out in 1974, had a plot full of holes and went on a bit.
