It is a little known fact that Columbus never actually set foot on the mainland of North America (or South America for that matter). He explored the Carribean Sea, thinking that each new island he came across might be Japan. Only subsequent explorers (Cabot and Vespucci) recognized that there was this great landmass separating Spain from the East.

Columbus didn't discover America, but he got to what is now the Dominican Republic in 1492. The first European to land on North american shores was probably Leif Erickson, who established a Viking settlement in northeastern Newfoundland in the eleventh century.

Yes, but no Viking settlement lasted for more than a generation in what the Eriksons called Vinland.
