Where on Earth did people first make columns by planting a tree on end, and why did they do it?

A very early example of a wooden column dates to about 2684 BCE and was found in Egypt -- see the site below -- but I suspect that much earlier examples once existed. Wood deteriorates as stone does not, so we will probably never know when it was that ancient builders began using column-like wooden supports hewn from trees. It wouldn't have been a stretch to come up with this idea.
