If your surname is O'Neill, Boyle, or Gallagher (or even O'Donnell or Doherty), what do some scientists think that they have discovered about your ancestry? And what might that ancestry have to do with THE most famous and widely-honored individual in your ancestral homeland's history?

Question #61837. Asked by lanfranco. (Jan 19 06 7:38 PM)

Someone mentioned to me recently that a greater percentage of Irish people can trace their lineage back to Niall of the Nine Hostages (and if I've got that name right I'l be amazed) than Mongols ho can trace theirs back to Genghis Khan.

Well, what do ya know, I got his name right.
Shame about the other two typos.

Nice, gmack, you get nine-tenths of a yay. But can you find one of the recent articles? And also, maybe, just mention the "widely-honored" person?

Yes, you did get Niall's name right. Are you really amazed? I'm not. I naturally expected it of you. Forget the typos.

Thanks Frankie. With that line in flattery, you're not part Irish yourself are you?

The Wiki article does link to a source about the scientific research.
It also mentions how Niall is supposed to have captured St Patrick and taken him to Ireland.

10 out of 10, gmack, and no, I'm an Anglo-Scot (with a bit of French and German thrown in), ancestrally speaking.

But here's the article I had in mind:
