Which famous character's surname changed to one beginning with O when a show translated from the stage to the big screen, making a song about her not quite as appropriate as it had been?

Sandy Dumbrowski became Sandy Olsson in "Grease" when the musical became a film. For that reason, "Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee" was no longer suitable.
Or I assume so, since I've never seen either the musical or the film, and I had to go to the wikipedia site on "Grease" to find a list of songs.
Here's the IMDB site. Click on "trivia" under "fun stuff".

And there I was thinking oil of Olay/Ulay...

Yay Frankie! Why they thought Olsson sounded any more Australian than Dumbrowsky I'm not sure.
If you've seen neither then what, prey tell, put you onto this answer?

Well, gmack, like most academics, I'm more or less a professional researcher. I just thought about some possible search terms ("character," "name change," "musical," etc.) on the basis of your question, entered them into Google in various combinations, and after a couple of minutes, I came up with that IMDB trivia site for "Grease."
After that, it was just a matter of finding the song list on the "Grease" Wikipedia site.

P.S. Does John Travolta actually sing in that film? CAN he sing?

Yes, a few choice phrases can get you a long way in Google (as in life).
His singing wasn't bad as it happens.
It surprised me, but according to Wikipedia, Travolta had released 17 singles in the US before "Grease", startng back in 1969.
His mother was a singer and he started his career as both actor and singer.
Tut, did I really type "prey tell"?

John Travolta had a top 10 hit in the mid 70's with "Let Her In" At the time he had a crush on Olivia Newton John and on his album cover he was standing in the woods, wearing a denim long sleeve shirt with arms folded. This was an exact copy of a O.N.J. album cover. When he got the chance to act w/ her, he jumped on it (more than once). The rest is history (or trivial trivia)
