It was the last hit in the 1951 NL series, also known as the "shot heard 'round the world," when Bobby Thomson homered off Ralph Branca.

October 3rd, A Great Day in Our History

On this date in 1951, the New York Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers met in the third playoff game to decide the National League pennant. It has often been called the greatest baseball game ever played.

The Giants had overcome a 13 1/2 game lead, going 37-7 down the stretch to catch the runaway Dodgers. After 2 playoff games, the series was tied, 1-1. Trailing, 4-1 in the bottom of the ninth, it looked hopeless for the Giants again at the Polo Grounds that day, but they never gave up. Hits by Dark and Mueller and a double by Lockman made it 4-2 as Bobby Thomson came to the plate to face Ralph Branca, who had come in to relieve Dodger starter Don Newcombe.

Thomson hit the 3-run homer to complete the amazing comeback, a 5-4 Giant victory to end a 14-year drought for the New Yorkers. It has been called "The Shot Heard 'Round the World" and "The Little Miracle of Coogan's Bluff". Russ Hodges' call on the radio broadcast still makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck 53 years later. What a moment of unbounded joy!

In baseball, the "Shot Heard 'Round the World" is the term given to the walk-off home run hit by New York Giants outfielder Bobby Thomson off Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Ralph Branca at the Polo Grounds to win the National League pennant at 3:58 p.m. EST on October 3, 1951.

Thomson's homer, and the Giants' victory after overcoming a double-digit lead by the Dodgers in the weeks preceding the playoff, are also sometimes known as the Miracle of Coogan's Bluff.
