    Republic of Vermont (January 15, 1777 to March 4, 1791)

    In 1777, Vermont declared her independence from Britain, ratified her own Constitution, and became an independent Republic. Fourteen years later, in 1791, Vermont joined the union of the United States as the 14th state.
