Mining for gold in one of my favorite publications, David Wallechinsky's "Complete Book of the Summer Olympics" (2004 edition), I find that gymnast Vitaly Scherbo earned 4 gold medals on one day in 1992. Many athletes have bettered the 4 medal total, because they specialized in sports that allowed it -- swimming, gymnastics, speed-skating, etc. Interested people looking to Torino might want to take a look at Wallechinsky's recently-published (2005) edition of his "Winter Olympics" book.
