    Well, according to Wikipedia, the character of Wilson was partly inspired by a neighbour that Tim chatted to when he was little and presumably couldn't see over the fence.
    The face of Wilson (full name Wilson Wilson, Jr played by Earl Hindman) was eventually seen as he took his bow in the season finale in 1999.

    The ongoing joke was certainly in full force on the episode where the Taylors went over to Wilson's house for Thanksgiving... As Wilson moved around his house, his face was variously blocked from view by a chandelier, cabinet doors and the like...
