If a film is described as a "rites-of-passage" film, what is it specifically refering to?

Question #62215. Asked by youngirishpsychologi. (Feb 02 06 1:40 PM)

If you're thinking of the same sort of film I am, I suppose I'd call these "coming of age" stories. In general, they refer to a young person's first encounters with some life experience -- love, sex, death, issues of loyalty and ethics -- and the manner in which they contribute to maturation and shape personality.

Here's an essay on the subject:

Moving from one "stage" of something to the next. Including a first encounter of whatever sort.
