Traditionally, in western cultures, June 1st is the start of the meteorological summer in the northern hemisphere and December 1st in the southern hemisphere. The astronomical summer begins with the summer solstice on June 21st or 22nd and December 21st or 22nd in the two hemispheres respectively. In Chinese astronomy, the solstice is taken as the middle of the season, so their summer starts on May 6th.
