Numerous. Some even were in the top ten at the same time with different artists, for instance Stranger in Paradise was in the top ten with THREE artists on 7th May 1955, Tony Bennett, Tony Martin and The Four Aces. Also in May 1955 Unchained Melody was in the top ten with three artists, Al Hibbler, Les Baxter and Jimmy Young. Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom was in there twice that month, Perez Prado and Eddie Calvert.

And that is only one month.

Of course, in those earlier days of the charts, the sales of sheet music counted towards the chart position so it was rather the song than the artist that was in the Top 10. Nowadays, they probably don't even publish sheet music for most of the stuff. Quite a lot of the records aren't even original - the DJs seem to rule with remixes. (I'm not knocking all remixes - try Aphex Twin's 26 Mixes for Cash - but I do wish DJs would go back to playing records and leave the music to the musicians.)

OK, here's some more recent examples for you with the artists and chart positions:
    "You've Got A Friend" - McFly (1), Brand New Heavies (9), James Taylor (4)
"Against All Odds" - Steve Brookstein (1), Mariah Carey & Westlife (1), Phil Collins (2)
    "Axel F" - Crazy Frog (1), Clock (7), Harold Faltermeyer (2)
    "Do They Know It's Christmas" - Band Aid 20 (1), Band Aid 2 (1), Band Aid (1)
"I'll Stand By You" - Girls Aloud (1), The Pretenders (10)
"Wonderwall" - Mike Flowers Pops (2), Oasis (2)
    "Words" - Boyzone (1), Bee Gees (8)
"With A Little Help From My Friends" - Sam & Mark (1), Wet Wet Wet (1), Joe Cocker (1), Young Idea (10)
"Twist and Shout" Chaka Demus & the Pliers (1), Salt-N-Pepa (4), Brian Poole & the Tremeloes (4)
"More More More" - Rachel Stevens (3), Andrea True Connection (5)
"How Deep is Your Love" - Dru Hill (9), Take That (1), Bee Gees (3)
"The Tide is High" - Atomic Kitten (1), Blondie (1)
I see that for at least three of those, the original performer doesn't get a look in.

Her diary was made into a movie in 2001 starring an actress who famously gained weight for the role. One of the songs in that movie, complaining of the fact that she is all by herself, is based on a 1976 hit song. This guy, before he spent every Saturday night dancing off a fever, spent some time in a plastic bubble. In it, he sang plaintively that he will never fall in love again, also based on another 1976 hit song. Both 1976 songs were by the same composer. What some people may not know is that he based the melody of each song on a much earlier work by still another famous composer. Who is the ultimate source of the melody for both 1976 hit songs?
